The standards for the design, testing and certification of fire rated openings changed when the International Building Code adopted the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC) 7-2-1997. This exception to the rule only applies to 20 minute rated fire doors. The confusion relates to what is this door called: is it a Category A door that requires no additional seal to achieve the positive pressure rating, or is it a Category B that requires an additional seal for the door to meet UL10C requirement? Cat “A” or “B” Pertains to positive pressure fire doors. Category “A”: A fire door that does not require the addition of other edge seal components to comply with positive pressure. i.e., built into the door – all intumescence and/or gasketing is furnished.
